IAMDYNAMITE will gain comparisons to that other famous two-piece from Michigan, the White Stripes, if only for being a duo also from Michigan concerned with keeping it simple. Aside from that, IAMDYNAMITE's sound is a bit more poppy and less rooted in the blues, with their debut album 2012's SUPERMEGAFANTASTIC full of short radio-friendly alternative songs that led to a tour opening for Sum 41.
Guitarist Christopher Martin and drummer Chris Phillips met while attending high school in the suburbs outside Detroit. “Some friends and I wanted to start a band, and with it being a really small town there were only three drummers, and Chris was the only real drummer with a kit and a place where we could rehearse,” Martin said on the band's formation to the Austin Examiner while IAMDYNAMITE were recording their debut at Pedernales Studios in Austin.
“Our sound is loud and fun. We try to keep it energetic and as powerful as we can. It's not that we are AC/DC or something, but we still want the music to be very impactful. We keep it simple, not because people can't enjoy things that are complicated, but simple is more impactful,” Martin went on to say.
