Jay Chou, A Unique Singer

Jay Chou, A Unique Singer

Jay Chou, a famous Chinese singer, was born in Taiwan and grew up in a single parent family dynamic while also being raised with the help of his grandmother. She and his mother have always been the two most beloved women in his life. At the mere age of 3 years old, his mother noticed his talent in music and used the family's savings to invest in a piano. Jay had a happy childhood, with his love for music from birth and the piano as his best friend. By the time Jay was studying in middle school, his parents had gotten divorced, which brought a great deal of stress. In class, Jay was often absent-minded and, as a result, received poor grades. He was initially denied admission to the senior high school. Fortunately, because of his musical talents, he was admitted at last.

Jay failed to enter college and instead began working a part-time job at a restaurant. During his shifts, Chou would often play the piano for guests in the restaurant. It became evident that the guests enjoyed his performances. Finally, in September 1997, under the encouragement of his father, Jay Chou put his talents to the test and participated in a singing contest called Super New King. The host, Jacky Wu, admired Jay very much and invited him to join in the Alfa music company as a music assistant. Jay began to write songs for the Alfa music company and in 2001 released his debut album, “Jay”, which won three big awards in Taiwan that year: best pop vocal album, best producer, and best composer. When it became clear that the Taiwanese people were still not completely familiar with Jay Chou, he issued another more powerful and unconstrained styled album called “Fantasy”, which was of great significance in determining his direction. Due to the success of the business operation, Chou shot to fame in South Asia with this single album.

In 2003, Jay Chou was featured on the front cover of Time Magazine's Asian edition. Jay Chou became the third Chinese singer, after Faye Wong and A Mei, to land on Time Magazine’s front cover. In 2008, his new album named “I Am Very Busy", won the grand prize as the best-selling album in Greater China in the World Music Award event held in Morocco. Then, in 2009, U.S. CNN selected the 25 most influential people in Asia, Jay Chou was one of the chosen influential people and described as an extraordinary artist on their website.

A mobile phone manufacturer investigated the global song downloads from 2008 to 2010, Jay Chou ranked third, just behind Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson. And in 2012, which may hit as a bit of a surprise to some, Jay landed on Forbes' Chinese celebrity list. However, he was not greedy.

After achieving great fame, Jay has since participated in various charitable activities. For example, after the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, Jay's total contributions amounted to more than 42 million yuan.

In 2015, on his 36th birthday, Jay Chou and his girlfriend Kun Ling held a wedding in the UK. Today, Jay Chou is raising a beautiful daughter, whose photos were shown on his micro blog, a lovely baby with long eyelashes.

Jay’s niche may be blues and hip hop, preferring the combination of Western and Chinese elements in order to create a distinctive sound. Some of his works fuse the natural environment and the scenes of everyday life, which reinforces the storytelling in his music. In a single word, Jay Chou brings a unique musical experience.
