The World Domination Plans of Musician Mary Ocher

The World Domination Plans of Musician Mary Ocher

If you wanted an extraterrestrial experience, you would normally have to camp outside Area 51, or recite your favorite Scully and Mulder quotes. Now you only have to visit a stage (probably somewhere around Austria, Italy or Germany), or put one of Mary Ocher's albums on.

The Russian-born performer is a favorite musical alien, who has flown in from Ziggy Stardust's home planet, and crash landed into Kate Bush's backyard. She's stepped out into our world covered in jewels, beads and sequins, playing otherworldly songs on her guitar, and walking to the rhythm of tribalistic drumbeats.

Over many rotations of the earth, Ocher has been nurturing her musical personality since writing her first lyrics at 11 and recording her first song when she was only 14 years old. Born in Moscow, 1986, it is easy to see where her theatrical flair and original thinking might have originated from. Her father, a voice and puppet theatre actor; her mother, an engineer. Ocher is a blend of drama and intelligence; known for her outsider-driven lyrics, wild stage outfits, feminist undertones, and social critique, she uses her unique upbringing to amplify her voice.

After moving to Tel Aviv with her parents when she was 4, she attended a religious Jewish school. Ocher later studied film at an art school, before dropping off the education planet in 12th grade. The songstress with the out-of-this-world-voice knew she wanted to be a performer from a young age and had set her laser sights on world domination. The first step of her plan would be moving to Berlin. Once there, she would then form the band “Mary and the Baby Cheeses”. Step 2: Go on to record 5 limited edition independent releases and unleash the noise to the people of planet Earth. Step 3: Get louder, get busier, reach more listeners.

In the year 2009, Ocher recorded her first full length album “War Songs”, in the comfort of her own spaceship, completely DIY and self funded. Attracting the attention of Berlin/Cologne based label Haute Areal, she re-recorded the whole thing and released it through them in March 2011. The popularity of this album was confirmed by the sell out 7” EP with 4 new tracks that followed in December 2011.

During one of her powerful performances at a karaoke bar in Berlin, Ocher was spotted by a fellow extravagant performer – the legendary King Khan (of King Khan and the Shrines), who would go on to produce her next full-length release, “EDEN”. “EDEN” was released on June 14, 2013 on Hamburg's Buback, and an American release followed in March 2014 on Hairy Spider Legs and Related Records. Things escalated from there, and Ocher then released “The Fictional Biography of Mary Ocher - The home recordings (2006 – 2015)” in April 2015. By 2015, she had toured all of Europe, from the UK to Russia and North America (three times), SE Asia, AU and NZ. Her goal of world domination, was well underway.

In 2015, the self-described “queen outsider of Berlin Avant-Pop” joined forces with the New-Tribalism/Kraut drum duo “Your Government”. Together, MO + YG sent out a limited edition 7” (Man VS Air/Thunderbird) in July of that year, which was a musical exploration of mystical connections with ancient spirits. The electronic tribal band has just released the full length self titled album on Faust's label Klangbad, this past January 7, 2016. Their multi-media show is a cacophony of visual projections, smoke, percussion and voodoo inspired outfits, and is a perfect example of the many talents of Mary Ocher.
