Junkyard Groove

Junkyard Groove

Junkyard Groove is an alternative rock band that was formed in Chennai, Tamil Nadu in 2005. The bands initial roster met almost randomly and decided that the Indian rock music scene was in need of some sprucing-up. Together, they formed a band that literally shaped the rock and roll scene of India.

With their original singer-songwriter, Ameesh Thomas, the band released its first studio album titled 11:11 in 2009 following a few EP releases and they became an instant success. Post the release, the band garnered a substantial fanbase and their popularity soared astonishingly. The album’s success had even earned them a number of prestigious awards such as the AVIMA award for their song “Folk You” as the Feel Good Song of The Year in 2010. Their song “It’s Ok” became a rock anthem and a favorite among many English music radio stations all over India.

After the success of 11:11, Junkyard Groove took a hiatus only to come back with another EP titled “Nicer in a Minute”. The EP featured 5 tracks. The track, “Say Goodbye” became an all-time favorite among the fans. Needless to say, the popularity of the band only grew afterwards.

JG’s second album “Accidental Heroes” was released in 2013. According to Ameesh, “my first new step out of my old life. It’s a journey about my life, my music, the band and people that come and go. Accidental Hero is the reflection of the present. Music is an emotion for me. Every song was written at different times. This is not a theme album like a lot of artists do. For me, it’s just storytelling. It’s like reading a book to a kid”. He was involved in the album as a producer, writer, and the sound engineer.

Apart from performing their own gigs, Junkyard Groove has also opened for many big daddies of the metal and rock realm such as Iron Maiden, Robert Plant, Incubus, and Prodigy in the past. The band has also had the opportunity to perform in music festivals such as Rock n' India in 2008 and Nh7 Weekender in 2010. They have also performed in Sarang IIT Chennai and Mood Indigo IIT Mumbai.

To this day, Junkyard Groove is considered one of the most polished and original bands that India has ever heard. Currently JG is busy working on their new EP which is set to be released soon. Ameesh has stated that this EP will feature a variety of electronic sounds. Previously, they were limited to only acoustic instruments but with this album they will be bringing more electronics and groove in their music.
